Digital Devices at School

At Marina View School we give an opportunity to our Year 5, 6, 7 and 8 students, to bring their own devices to school. We would like to emphasize that this is optional and not compulsory. However, we really encourage children to bring their own devices to use in class, to support their learning. Each classroom has a limited number of digital devices available for students to use at all year levels.

It is our aim to develop in our students the capability, skills and attitudes that will enable them to be learners for life. We want our young people to grow and develop, knowing and applying the qualities and characteristics of lifelong learners.

Our overall goal at Marina View School is to empower students to achieve and make a difference. Technology is an element to engage students and have students engage in their learning, therefore, the objective of ‘Bringing their own Personalised Learning Device’ is to develop an environment that caters for 21st century learning.

All students who bring a device must first sign the Cybersafety Student Agreement along with their parents. They must also have read the Student Responsibilities and Device Requirements documentation attached to the agreement.

Minimum Device Requirements:

Cellphones & Wearable Digital Technology

In line with Ministry of Education directives, Marina View School does not allow students to use cellphones or wearable digital technology during the school day. These new rules are designed to ensure that the learning of all students is maximised, while minimising any potential for distraction and online cyber-bullying.

We discuss the school rules about personal digital devices at the beginning of the year with the students and communicate via our newsletter and in a face to face parent meeting with whānau. Any changes to our school rules are communicated to students and our school community.

Parent/Caregiver & student responsibilities:

Wearable digital technology should not be used to communicate with parents/caregivers during class time. If a parent/caregiver needs to contact their child urgently during the day, they should call the office.

If a student does bring their cellphone or wearable digital technology to school, it will be collected each morning by their teacher, stored safely in their classroom, and given back at the end of the day.

GAFE (Google Apps for Education)

To support digital E-learning at school, Marina View School students and staff use Google Apps for Education (GAFE). GAFE is a cloud based learning platform allowing teachers and students to create a range of documents online. GAFE allows us to collaborate and learn more effectively through the use of technology, and offers a range of new learning opportunities for teachers and students.

If you have any questions about GAFE or student devices, you can email Colin Gover: info@marinaview.school.nz
