Marina View School’s Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

To our Marina View School Community

Kia ora e te whānau whānui

We are writing to you in light of the recent announcement by the New Zealand Government regarding the removal of the obligation for schools to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

At Marina View School, we want to be very clear, this change does not alter our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our school’s vision and strategic direction is built upon the principles of partnership, protection, and participation that Te Tiriti represents. We remain steadfast in fostering a culturally strong and inclusive environment where all our tamariki can learn, thrive, and grow with a deep understanding of Aotearoa’s shared history and identity.

We are especially proud of our strong and positive relationship with our mana whenua partner, Te Kawerau ā Maki. Their guidance, support, and knowledge are integral to the life of our school, and in shaping the cultural identity of our students. Together, we continue to nurture a learning environment that honours Māori language, culture, and perspectives, ensuring that all our children experience the benefits of the partnership Te Tiriti offers.

Our vision is for a future where our children and grandchildren inherit a nation enriched by the principles of Te Tiriti, a nation that values partnership, mutual respect, and the cultural heritage that makes Aotearoa unique. We will continue to uphold these values in every aspect of school life and remain committed to walking alongside our whānau, staff, and mana whenua partners on this journey.

We thank you for your continued support as we stand together in the spirit of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Ngā mihi nui,

Rachel Oldham-Ormiston
