Specialist Programmes

Marina View school offer a range of programmes to help support children’s learning.

Learning Support

Children with special learning needs are identified very early and given programmes appropriate to their need. This may involve individual or small group assistance. Limited funding is received from the Ministry to support these programmes. Teacher Aides work throughout the school to support individual and/or groups of children in their learning.

Marina View School also has a Learning Support Coordinator who ensures children and young people with disabilities and / or additional learning needs have access to the services they need.

Better Start Literacy Approach

Marina View School has recently implemented the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA). BSLA is a structured approach to literacy instruction for Year 0 to Year 8 classrooms, to support children’s reading, writing and oral language success. This approach has been developed in New Zealand by a team of researchers from the University of Canterbury, following years of research on the best ways to support children’s early reading, writing and oral language skills.

PMP (Perceptual Motor Programme)

Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP) is a programme based on movement that helps younger students to enhance their hand-eye and foot-eye coordination. PMP is also a fantastic tool for supporting students growth in areas such as fitness, balance, locomotion and eye-tracking skills. This is a valuable coordination skills programme that we offer our Year 1 & 2 children. We run the programme in the school hall. We rely on parent and caregiver help to run this programme.

E.S.O.L (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Students who are non English speaking receive extra support within the classroom setting and through specialist small group instruction. This assists with their English language acquisition.

Garden to Table

Garden to Table is a programme which empowers tamariki to grow, harvest, prepare and share great food. Marina View School has a large garden in which the students come together regularly to plant, harvest and maintain a selection of vegetables. The students learn to care for and nurture the gardens weekly by weeding, turning the soil, picking the vegetables which gives them pride in their school community.

Intermediate students also have the opportunity to cook the vegetables that they have harvested during Food Technology lessons.

Activ8

Activ8 is a leadership programme that teaches social skills, facilitated by David Curtis. The Activ8 programme has a strong emphasis on the acquisition of practical skills that provide problem-solving frameworks that can be applied to real life situations. Weekly reinforcement builds on learned skills and provides opportunities to practise problem solving, social and emotional, and team skills in group situations.
