School Zone

The Education Act gives a guarantee of enrolment to students who live in the home zone specified in the school’s enrolment scheme. The Board needs to be sure that an in zone address is genuine, because it is required to manage the enrolment scheme for the benefit of local students.

The address given at the time of application for enrolment must be the student’s usual place of residence when the school is open for instruction. This means that if you currently live at an in zone address but move to an out of zone address before your child’s first day of attendance at the school, your child will not be entitled to enrol at Marina View School. The Ministry of Education has advised that parents should also be warned of the possible consequences of deliberately attempting to gain unfair priority in enrolment by knowingly giving a false address or making an in-zone living arrangement which they intend to be only temporary, e.g.

• Renting accommodation in-zone on a short-term basis;
• Arranging temporary board in-zone with a relative or family friend;
• Using the in-zone address of a relative or friend as an “address of convenience”, with no intention to live there on an ongoing basis.

If the school learns that a student is no longer living at the in-zone address given at the time of application for enrolment and has reasonable grounds to believe that a temporary in-zone residence has been used for the purpose of unfairly gaining priority in enrolment at the school, then the board may review the enrolment. Unless the parents can give a satisfactory explanation within 10 days, the board may annul the enrolment. This course of action is provided for under section 110A of the Education Act 1989.

All students who live within the home zone described below and shown on the attached map shall be entitled to enrol at the school. Children living within the catchment zone shall be entitled to attend Marina View School as of right. This zone is deemed to be those streets bounded by Luckens Road, Hobsonville Road (odd numbers from 119-233 incl.) and Marina View Drive, including:

• Cul de sacs leading off those roads.
• West Harbour Drive from even nos. 108 and above, and odd nos. 125 and above (Luckens Road end).

For all in zone enrolments, an enrolment form is to be completed. Enrolment forms can be collected from the school office. We will also require a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport, immunisation certificate and proof of your residential address such as a utility bill. Due to roll growth, Marina View School operates an Enrolment Zone as required by the Ministry of Education. A ballot is held in October each year, the date is set by the Ministry of Education for available places within the school. There may be limited Out of Zone places. If required, children will be selected through a Ballot system. It is Government policy that those with siblings already attending Marina View School will have priority at the time of a Ballot. The school will sometimes also hold a May ballot process.

Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:

First Priority:
This priority is not applicable as the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary For Education.

Second Priority:
Will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students

Third Priority:
Will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students

Fourth Priority:
Will be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school

Fifth Priority:
Will be given to applicant who are children of Board employees

Sixth Priority:
Will be given to all other applicants

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989.

Applicants seeking 2nd or 3rd priority status will be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
