Year 7 & 8

Year 7 & 8 at Marina View School

We understand that Year 7 & 8 are important years in the growth of children. We are committed to offering exciting educational opportunities and supporting the individual growth and development of our children, in this special area of Marina View School. We are focused on our students developing independence and leadership skills, across all areas of the curriculum. These attributes will assist them greatly to enter their High School years with confidence and to seize the opportunities that the next step of their educational journey has to offer.

As we are a Full Primary School, we are fortunate to know our children well as they transition into the Year 7 & 8 area of the school. We have strong relationships with our children, and their families, and can offer individualised support or extension that they may need.

Our Year 8 students are celebrated with a Graduation Ceremony and Graduation Dinner as part of our Year 7 & 8 Prize Giving.

Our Year 7 and 8 uniform is different from Years 1-6. Year 7 and 8 students wear navy shorts and a tailored light blue chambray shirt. There is also a separate P.E. Uniform which is worn on the days students have Physical Education.

Students’ efforts for achievement and demonstrating school values, are recognised and rewarded through the merit system. Students work towards receiving their Bronze, Silver and Gold Merit badges. These are celebrated at school assemblies. The Merit badges are sewn onto student’s sleeves.

Year 8 Leaders

Students who demonstrate leadership potential are selected into a MVS leaders group. These students help to run various activities around the school. Recent MVS leader events include organising fundraising initiatives and Mufti Days, assisting with special visitors to the school and helping to organise school events, including guest speakers.

To help them grow as leaders, they regularly meet with the Deputy Principal and the Year 7/8 Senior Teacher, who guide and support them, in different roles around the school.

Year 8 Leaders are also given the opportunity to attend a trip each year, with a purpose of building collegiality between leaders and their teachers, and to learn about some of New Zealand’s history and see first hand examples of leadership.
